Send log messages to root (Like Slackware)

I used to use slackware a few years ago and I remeber that it had emails sent to root containing messages from tripwire, and other system messages.

Currently I'm using Gentoo and I would like to recreate this. I want to be able to send a email to root using a shell script if any of my cron jobs errors. Now with slackware I did not have any email setup, it just seemed to deliver it locally, which is what I want. I don't what to have to actually create a real email address for root for him to get the messages

It's about default cron behaviour and not anything Slackware specific, see "man 5 crontab" about environment variables, the MAIL one.
