SCSI Tape Operation

I am running a Linux system (Redhat 6.1, kernel 2.2.13-0) with a Benchmark DLT SCSII tape drive, which is addressed as /dev/st0. I need to copy several files to tape, but I am only able to copy a single file. It seems that no matter what command I issue, the tape always rewinds after the operation. For example, if I use mt to forward space a file, the tape forward spaces and then rewinds. If I copy two files to the tape, only the last one is there; the first is overwritten. On other Unix systems (e.g., HP), I can specify a device name with "nr" appended, which prevents rewind. Can anyone please tell me how to do the equivalent with Linux? Thanks very much in advance!
