Scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d

How do I upgrade the server software that is bundled with RH8?

If I download a new build, the normal practice is to install it to "/usr/local", which would seem a different thing than the older build whose script is placed in "/etc/rc.d/init.d"

I'm really confused about how to install something and then run it with scripts from "/etc/rc.d/init.d"

For users of "LittleRedRidinghood" the
recommended installation is using RPM's ;)

Cheers,
