script noob

Hey everyone. I am looking to write a script that will increment a counter everytime a file gets updated. Is there anything like that around, or any programs that can detect file updates?

The deal is I've got a genentic algrothim running, but my partners who coded most of it, forgot to put a generation counter that keeps track of it. I don't want to stop the program to code that little bit, because its been running for quite some time and I don't want to loose too much of the 'learning' that has happend. The program writes out to the disk after every generation, and I figured that if I could keep track of that, with out sitting in front of the 'puter all night to count.

any suggestions?

Thanks

The best suggestion I can make is that you google up some script libraries. There are several folks out there who have script libraries (bash, perl, python) that you can d/l and study or adapt to your needs. The scripts run from the very simple to the very complex. If they don't solve your problem, they should at least give you ideas on how to write your own.
