screwed up mysql by changing password, help!

Yoo. I just installed mysql. I wanted to set a password for the root user... so I ran:

update set password='mypassword' where user='root';

Or something like that. Anyways... i restarted mysqld, and I can still login to mysql with root and no password. BUT, if I try to use the mysql table, it won't let me, even with teh password i specified! Eek! Dumb me! Now I know how to do it, but how do I fix my error??

Thanks,
justin
