Screen goes blank(random) to vertical lines

Anyone have an idea what causes this?
I am in gnome and doing nothing special and the screen suddenly goes to an image of vertical lines and boom..just like that I have to do a hard reboot.

Anyone have any ideas? Graphics card? Memory? any ideas?

My first guess is that your monitor is beginning to die. If you have another monitor available you might swap them and see if the problem also occurs on the second monitor.

I had a monitor die in a similar fashion over about 2 months. The malfunction was triggered by vibration. I could usually bring on the malfunction by shaking the desk.

I have the same problem

I have exactly the same problem with Suse 8.2. I don't think my monitor are going to die though, since I have a dual system, with Windows XP I have not got any problem whatsoever. So I think there must be something wrong with the settings. Could some expert here give a solution for this very annoying problem? After the monitor goes blank, I have to force it to reboot again.

TIA
