Scrambled video

Hi, I have redhat 7.1 installed on a pentium pro with a 16mb voodoo banshee card. It boots fine to text mode. If I start GNOME from the command line (startx), then logout, it goes back to text mode but the screen is unreadable. Full of odd characters and lines. Seems like it just doesn't reset. At this point I initiate a reboot. I can see shutdown stuff happening on screen but can't read it. I'm sure it's not the card because I've tried using the built 1meg cirrus-logic with the same results. The monitor is generic but has worked fine in Win98 and looks good using gnome.

no... it's not the card. i've seen this before, but i really don't have an answer. somehow, the character set of the base terminal is getting changed or corrupted. this can also happen if you try to cat a binary file. the only way i've ever been able to fix this is to just restart the computer. in linux, there's almost always a way to fix anything without actually rebooting, but you're going to have to find a script or a program to fix it. i'll let you know if i find anything.
