scanner server?

I currently have a print server, making it very easy to print from any of my computers without having to make sure another one is on. As long as the print server is on, I know I can print. Is there a way to do something like this for my scanner? Right now only my windows computer has access to the scanner and as far as I can tell, windows can't share it.

Thanks,

There is no protocol for sharing a scanner that I am aware of. However, I could imagine (under linux) a php script running in lighttpd that scans the file and provides the document for you to download. Seems fairly straightforward.
