Samba question

Hi all. I have a question regarding Samba. I've never actually used it before but i'd like to give it a try someday and i'm just wondering for those who use it: Are you able to share files on a network with people who are running windows? I'm on a large network at school and i'm just wondering if its possible for me to share music, games and other stuff on the network with others and download from them as well. Is it hard to use and set up? Thanks in advance to any responses .

I currently don't use samba, but yes, it was made to share directories, files and printers. I would download webmin ( to set it up for a quicker and easier way to manage it. Or if you feel adventurous, you could buy a book from oreilly, "using samba" and write your own conf file for sharing. (

The only one that could set this up is your admin at your school unless you figured out his root password

Also, if you are a student, shouldn't you be learning instead of playing games and listing to music, and if you are the admin, shame on you hehe

I recommend swat, the configuration tool that comes with samba, rather than webmin.

You can set samba up on any box you have physical console access to.

I go to UConn, we don't study here, we drink and play video games and watch basketball . lol just kidding. You know how it goes, can't study all the time.

Thanks for the quick answers guys, much appreciated . I'll fire up samba one of these days and share the goods.
