Samba Problem

Hi, I'm having a problem with samba file sharing. Is there a way to not have a guest access the machine through the nobody account. This causes a huge problem when i save something into a file on my linux box from my windows box and I don't have permissions for it.
smb.conf attached.

Code:
# Global Parameters

workgroup = WORKGROUP
netbios name = linux
encrypt passwords = True
browseable = yes
security = share

[homes]
read only = no
public = yes
guest ok = yes
create mask = 0777
directory mask = 0777

[skins]
path = /usr/share/xmms/Skins
read only = no
public = yes
guest ok = yes
This used to work. I'm not sure what happened.

The name on my windows box has no password, and is the same as the name on my linux box, only capitalized. If that makes a difference.

You can change your guest account from the default "nobody" user in your smb.conf file.

Under [Global] add the following line:

guest account = accountname

Hope this helps

If I changed the guest account to my own account, would the user saving something from the windows box onto the linux box be prompted for a password?

I'm not sure about that, it's not a very clean way to set Samba up and could create some security problems.
You should concider changing you security to user instead of share.

If you were using the 'user' setting you could the create a user-map file and users would be automatically associated with their windows accounts, thereby eliminating the need for a 'guest' account.

This is done by adding the following to the [Global] options:
security = share
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers

Then you would add to '/etc/samba/smbusers' something like:

#Linux-Login = Windows-Login
jdoe = johndoe
pdiddy = pimp
someone = someone

There is plenty to be found on Google about this security level.
You should also ensure that everybody's windows password is the same as their smbpasswd.

my windows password is set to null, is that going to create a problem. to be honest, it's not a huge deal as i'm off to college soon anyway. This is RH9 we're talking about here. not exactly the most modern of operating systems. I just don't want to change distros or try BSD until i get to college and that broadband connection. I'm on 56k now.

A trick

Hi,

Try Webmin or Swat to help you to configure your samba. Each one can be downloade and installed with no problmes. Both are tiny and runn in webrowser.
Webmin uses your server IP and the port 10000 i.e.: 10.0.0.2:10000. They have a very good procedure where you will chose and convert Linux users in samba users.

Also, what is the Win version you are running. Because 98 could create problems.
Since you set your samba configuration as "share " no password will be necessary.

Take care about how your mounting poins is setted. The permissions to write and execute just will work if the righ permissions is put in FSTAB and MTAB.

Good luck
Eduardo
