Samba/Debian server with Win 7 Pro client - Desktop mapped to server issue.
This is probably a Win 7 issue and has nothing to do with a problem with the way I am using linux, but, I was hoping someone might have some insight. First let me say that I have only been using linux for about 5 years, so I may make some errors along the way. This is what I am doing:
Debian 6.0~ server with virtual box 4.1.2 and Debian 6.0~ guest with Samba configured as a file server for a dozen or so windows XP clients. Things had been going along just fine for a number of years with XP, until one day when we needed to replace an XP Pro box. Despite concerns about mapping shares with the win 7 box, after a bit of fiddling that seems to be working. The issue now is that I had been mapping "My Documents" and the windows desktops to the server so that everything gets backed up even when the user disregards what I tell them and saves stuff directly to the desktop. I thought everything was going to be fine, however, now when I create a new folder on the desktop and then wish to rename it, I get the crazy error "The file 'filename' is too large for the destination file system." (regardless of any content of the folder) I am guessing some sort of permissions issue, but, what & where? I AM able to create the folder and put stuff in it. It is on the same share that the XP machine had been using. Why can't I rename it on the desktop? The interesting part is, If I navigate to that location via "my computer" and the mapped drive, "W:" in this case, I am able to rename the folder without issue. Server has lots of drive space and lots of memory. Must be a Win 7 issue. Ideas?????? please...
