Unhappy Samba configuration problem

Hi Fellow LINUX users,

The utility of LINUX is known only when I am able to access my LINUX machine from any other windows machine, isnt it ?

I am trying to achieve just that, with the help of samba, and unfortunately, I am not able to do it ...

I am doinf perfect with the configuration file smb.conf, because I have referred atleast 5 pages and manuals for it ....I have a unix username and password that is similar to the one used in windows.

The problem is that whenever I start the samba server, I am able to find the computer icon in the "Network Neighbourhood" window of windows, and even the comment ("server string name" option) is appearing....but then when I double click on it, the computer says "Network or path name not found.".

I suspect authorisation to be the reason, but I am not able to make a clear picture of it ...

What could be the possible problem ? could anyone help me out ?

Hi Vijayasarathy, welcome to lq. Could you post the smb.conf, and any relevant info on the network topology, e.g. os's involved, cabling, routers, etc.?
good luck.

Thanks to peacedog and comprookie2000

Hi all,

Thanks to comprookie2000 and Peacedog for extending ta helping hand, but thank god, I managed to find the problem myself and solved it...

I was being perfect with the samba configuration file smb.conf, but then the one that was doing the trick was ....iptables !! The firewall was blocking the ports that samba normally uses ....and when I disabled iptables, samba was working perfectly ....

I am actually setting up a mixed network with a few solaris thin clients connected to a solaris server, a few windows+linux clients connected to a windows server, and a few firewalls and gateways and switches ......so I am definitely coming back with more questions !!

Regards all.
