I want to set samba up so that on the windows machine i can get to that stuff. i have it almost there but in xp when you click on the share it pops up and ask for the user name. The user name is guest and it grayed out and then ask for a password. the root password does not even work. What am i doing wrong.

I'm no expert but one thing that could help here is to create a user on the linux box that matches the windows username. I'm told that the passwords do not need to be the same, however in practice this is the only way I've managed to get it working.

If you are not concerned about passwords then you can add the

guest ok=yes

directive to the share.

***Note that the guest user still needs an account on the linux box and that account must have access to the files you are attempting to share.

-Matt

Here is an example

#In the global section
guest account = mhiggins

#An example share
[OBSDSource]
comment = OpenBSD Source Tree
path = /usr/src
writeable = no
guest ok = yes
