Samba and XP didn't work well in the past (at least, Samba2) dunno if its solved in 3, but XP tends to digitally encrypt the communication. If you disable that, it might work... Not too sure if this is also the case when you do not have a samba domainserver so i could be totally wrong here, but its worth a shot. Search for SignOrSeal and samba...
im using samba 3.0.13 and work very good with xp, i have about 10 xp and 2 98 windows clients
i just never got sending messages between clinets to work
