safely, easily resizing ext3 partition
i previously had winblows 98se on here with Redhat Linux 8.0 but as soon as i got Half-Life working under Linux i no longer need winblows. i have already deleted the fat32 partition and now i just want an easy, safe way to resize the main ext3 partition.

I am no expert, I am having a partition problem myself.. and I was refered to this link
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html Maybe it will help you as well. GL |
yeah i already have those on floppys i'll try them tomorrow. i just really dont want to screw up. i have to move the swap partition and then i have to resize the main ext3 partition. i sure hope this works. i got nearly 2 gigs of difficult-to-replace files that i dont want to lose. and i have no CD burner or tape drive.
i do have partition magic 7 around. this is a crazy idea but any chance i could run that under WINE and do the moving and resizing with that? |
using a program under wine to move stuff around on a partion level is..well..crazy :)
whenever you mess with the partion table, you risk it all. if you can't afford to loose the data, back it up, even if you have to purchas equipment or back it up to another system. |
is there any graphical tool i can use? if all else fails, i can use Parted but if at all possible i'd like to avoid that. would it help any if i posted my drive information in Parted so someone who's used it can help?

Partition magic 8 supports ext3.
Make the two floppys on a windoze machine (or reinstall it if U have 2). Boot from them and delete the win partition and resize the ext3 partition. |
why not just keep your current partition pie and mount your empty one somewhere? or put stuff on it (like /usr) and mount it there?
b.t.w.... "fips" is a great partition re-sizer |
My idea...
Leave the partition as it is Use it from Linux (or better still format it on ext3) Use it for saving critical data End-result.......... No need to resize ext3 partition Hope this helps... |
simple use fdisk and change the partition type
|
i've already got everything sorted out now. and btw, Half-Life runs great under Linux. :)
|
Well you can format it to .ext3 through linux, but I don't know about merging them in linux, but if you do merge them you will have to edit stuff, lilo/grub & fstab for one thing.
