A couple of corrections. Mepis is based on Debian, not Ubuntu. PCLinuxOS is independent; it started as a fork of Mandriva, but then Mandriva started as a fork of Red Hat. Mint certainly comes with KDE as well as Gnome (and Xfce, and LXDE).

Sabayon is certainly bleeding-edge, but they usually fix things pretty quickly. The latest version came out on 23 June with two bugs (as far as I could see). The first was fixed in just three days, and they're looking into the other one.

Ubuntu strikes me as getting a bit Mac-ish: "This is what we think you ought to like; if you don't, go somewhere else." Community-based distros like Sabayon are interested in what their users think.

If you want something that just works and has good media support, I'd recommend Mepis, Mint, PCLinuxOS, Sabayon, Salix, Vector, or ZevenOS.

Actually, in 2007 (which is when this thread dates from) mepis 6.0 had moved to using ubuntu repos and packages.
