Question rxvt: can't open slave tty /dev/pts/3

I was bored (can't work after injury) and compiled a 2.4.20 kernel. Everything runs well as expected, but one thing confuses me a lot: My standard terminal is 'rxvt' or 'aterm'. After booting the new kernel, both are quitting with following error-msg:

rxvt: can't open slave tty /dev/pts/3

Note: .../3 was any number. Dunno, if it's random-generated.

But 'xterm' runs well. Seems pretty strange to me Any ideas?

I forgot: If I log into XFree86 as 'root' I can start 'aterm' and 'rxvt'. Still no hints? Please!

Update:

I changed the permissions of /dev/pts:

root.tty all on rw

Now I can start 'rxvt'. But if I try to start it with 'rxvt -ls' I recieve this error-msg:

dev/ttyp0: Operation not permitted
kater@backyard:~$

But the error-msg doesn't affect 'rxvt. I can use it normally.

Aterm doesn't start at all.
