running Xapps as root in a users X


hello,

When I open a root xterm and try to run an x-application, I get the following error.
Code:
Can't open display:
thats it... no more

this is ROOT running commands... shouldn't he have the power to crumble the universe un my computer...? he's the master - he sould be able.

any ideas?

As the user you need to allow conenctions:
xhost +
(this disables all access control - use the man page for more information about restricting it further)

Then as root export a display variable:
export DISPLAY="127.0.0.1:0"

If you are using KDE you could use the kdesu program. I have a application launcher on my taskbar, and just type it into there. For example: kdesu konqueror when I want to copy a file or directory to /usr.

thank you all - the xhost-version is a neat way to do use and sux aswell. jschiwal, sorry, I don't use kde - too much of a memory giant. I use fluxbox thanks anyway!
