Running with 2 different kernels

I am using gentoo....
I have the default kernel configured for my os.Now i downloaded the vanilla sources and kept them in /usr/src(emerge did this for me--Basically i did emerge vanilla-sources)

Now my linux in /usr/src points to the default kernel..........i want to boot my system with the vanilla sources. What should i do for that......

Should a simlple make && make mrproper in that directory do?
The README file warns that I place the kernel in a different location from /usr/src and do the work...........

Can someone clearly explain the steps to be done to get my system boot with vanilla sources?

you can simply follow the steps gento.org explains in its install documentation. there is a section on how to build a kernel, and i assume as you are running gentoo you already have done such a thing. that means: configureing the kernel, making the kernel, copying the correct files to /boot and adding the correct lines to your grub.conf
