Running programs?

RH8, Kde, Opera7

My system seems to slow down the longer im on it and its really slow when i log on as a user, root is really fast, my question is How can i find out what programs and processes in linux i dont need running while logged in as a user? I am hoping that by shutting down some stuff i dont need it will run faster when logged in as a user. Thanks

at shell execute:

'top'

You'll see the processes that are taking most of your cpu and memory resources

You may also want to press "M" and "P" to sort by Memory usage and Processor usage. h takes you to help and q will quit.

Try typing the name into google and you can see what it does. The user that the proccess is running as also gives a clue. If it is just a user process then it is likely to just kill your session but if it is a root proccess then it may be a more critical process

Why would we want to attack you?? Anyway, we would need your IP (which we doesn't have, and no interested to have it) Just the administrators of this site could get it by checking logs but I don't think they're interested on hacking you.

In KDE, turn off all effects. Also move the slider to slow computer. This should speed up the system. You can use a lighter window environment. I heard Redhat is slow with KDE. You can try tweaking Redhat's kernel and other settings. Make sure you make a boot disk and it works.
