Running .jar files

I saw an old thread about this (written in 2006) but it didn't seem to help. My efforts below reflect the advice given in that thread:

I suppose the same principles should apply to running all java files. I can successfully run Jreepad from the command line using either of these two methods.

Code:
• java -jar ~/.jreepad/Jreepad-1.5.jar
• /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java -jar ~/.jreepad/Jreepad-1.5.jar &
However if I try to create a launcher (or more preferably a menu item) then nothing at all seems to happen.

And in case this helps; here is the results of my " java -version "

Code:
java version "1.6.0_20"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.9) (6b20-1.9.9-0ubuntu1~10.04.2)
OpenJDK Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)

Try to use full path instead of ~.

Replace ~/.jreepad/Jreepad-1.5.jar
with /home/username/.jreepad/Jreepad-1.5.jar
