Running applications as root

Now I typically just use the su command to gain root privileges when needed, but is there a way to gain root privileges in most desktop environments? I use KDE at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

That's the best way. You can make some things suid root but you should be cautious.

What apps are we talking about?

No apps in particular. I was just thinking about maybe accessing a configuration file in Konqueror and then being told I don't have the permissions to save to it. It would be nice to be able to right click the file and select something like - Run as Root. Right now I just go to the command line and edit the file using su and vi. Which I really have don't mind doing. Guess it is just a curiosity question really. Thanks.

You could use sudo, you would still need to edit the shortcuts.
