runlevel 3

:study:
How does one use another GUI interface while using runlevel 3?

When using runlevel 3 and startx KDE is always used. I guess my question is:
how does one use say Gnome, or another GUI, while in runlevel 3?

If I type in gnome in the terminal I receive the message the display is not avialable.

exec gnomesession or something like that. If your wanting to change this permanently for the default when you type startx, just edit your .xinitrc file in your home directory.

Thanks for the reply..:)

I gave the "exec" gnomesession and gnome, but the system still indicates that it is "undable to use display".

If it helps, I am using SuSE 8.1 Distro.

It would seem that if I use "startx gnome" the gnome environment will now run, however I did try this out to begin with, a hunch, and it did not work. Sometimes I really do not know what is going on..:)
Anyway, I am glad that I do have an option now...:)

Thanks for your help trickykid. :D

Try kdm or gdm

SpEcIeS 08-27-2003 03:36 PM

After using a GUI environment I am wanting to return to the terminal. KDM or GDM does not allow this. At least not on my machine...:)

Thanks anyway Cooner...:)

You could try 'xwmconfig' (or is that only a slackware thing?)

it will set your default window manager based on available options in /etc/X11/xinit/
(i.e. xinitrc.kde, xinitrc.fluxbox, xinitrc.wmaker, etc.)

Then simply 'startx'

I guess that would be a 'global' setting, whereas what trickykid described would be user-specific.

slakmagik 08-27-2003 05:14 PM

xwmconfig is Slack-specific, I'm pretty sure - at least Patrick Volkerding wrote the script. And it's set only for the user who runs it. I'd just ditch GDM/KDM altogether like it sounds like he did. *hates graphical logins* Then the usual 'edit .xinitrc' route, I guess.

SpEcIeS 08-27-2003 07:14 PM

The xwmconfig file does not exist on the SuSE 8.1 distribution. As digiot suggested, it is Slackware specific, but thanks to you all for your help in this matter...:D

The problem seems to be solved with the "startx" command with the environment name added.
