RPM / uninstalling "pre-installed" RH modules

I just completed a RH 6.2 installation and my ethernet card is finally working so I'm reading to start installing and removing the modules I feel I need and don't need.

I understand that RPM can assist me in this task. Being a 6.2 dist most the software that I do want (PostgreSQL, mySQL, Apache, PHP, Perl, JDK) are out-dated or not installed.

What's the best method to remove these items? I want to strip my system down to the "bare bones" and then start to build it up.

Also generally, from a web server standpoint, is it best to install Apache and then various platforms like Perl, PHP, ColdFusio etc, or vice-versa, or does it not matter (which would be great :))

Any advice or help, please let me know. The RPM HOWTO seemed to focus more on building the modules and installing and didn't focus a whole lot on removing modules.

you just mean now to uninstall rpms???

use gnorpm, and uninstall to your hearts desire

you could use the rpm -e command, but that's just confusing, cos i never know exact;y what each package is actually called.

Always best to install apache first, i tihnk some of them might have minor dependencies on apache.

I used the default server install so GNOME isn't on here. That's actually one of the first things I'd like to install and configure once I get everything cleaned up.

Or... should I just install GNOME first? What's the easiest way to do this?

I'd probably just install gnome, but if you really want to get rid of as much as possible, you'd need update any dependencies for it first...

likesay, you can erase packages with rpm -e, but i've no idea how to actually find out what the packe name actually is, version number etc...
