RPM Package Manager problem! help please!!!
 

Hello, I recently installed Mandrake 9.1 but it seems that the installation has gone wrong because i cannot install any RPM package. When i try any command i get the message: Failed to open /usr/lib/rpm/rpmrc: No such file or directory.
There is nothing at /usr/lib/rpm so it looks like rpm wasnt installed during the Mandrake Installation. I really need help...i have to install some packages and i cant. What solutions are there apart from re-installing the whole OS. I would really apreciate some help from anyone.

I am not completely familiar with Mandrake but you may be able to find a statically linked version of rpm on your Mandrake CD or on the Mandrake FTP site.

Ofcourse this may create more problems then it solves since you'll also need to update some RPM dependancy databases.

You could also try getting the tar.gz package for whatever software you are trying to install and building from source.

You are going to have to use the Mandrake distribution system rpm to install rpm onto your Linux system. I have never used Mandrake but Mandrake must have a way to do a partial installation.

I suggest that you boot you Mandrake install CD and look for a way to do a partial install or an update to an existing system, something like that.

Or install Gentoo, that will put an end to your rpm problems.

Thanks to all. Ive gathered your ideas and i will try them tonight....i will try reinstalling rpm from the mandrake CD or looking to see if there is any 'rescue' or repair option i can use. If not i will install Gentoo as yngwin suggested :p
