Hey There, I had a similar issue. I am running mandrake 10.0 and installed dpkg via rpm so I could learn it. rpm didn't register it as installed. When I try to verify or erase the package it says it is not installed and when I try to install it says it is installed. I used the rpm -qa | grep packgename which worked great only to tell me what I already knew, but is a good pointer nonetheless. Any ideas as to why this is occurring? It all started when I tried to use dpkg and it gave me an error regarding is not being registered as installed. Let me know what you think.

Thanks

hi therew

whatb i think is that it happens due to some incorrect package installations
the installtion might be going on and something might have interuppted it
u can also try rebuilding the rpm package database

regards

No go, good idea, but no go. backed up /var/lib/rpm and then ran rpm --rebuilddb. When I when to verify my package typing ( I am a rookie by the way): "rpm -V packagename" I get "package packagename is not installed" then I type "rpm -i packagename" and get "package packagename is already installed". I am obviously no expert in logic but how can that be other than the package is broken and using the -e option results the same as the -V one. I'll let you keep trying to thik of stuff because despite not seeing results it sounds like you're on the right track.

Thanks again.

i think people are getting confused. there is no "problem", nothing is "wrong"

rpm -e package-name
rpm- -i file-name

the difference in the two commands should be easily understandable

I assume that was directed at me.

I don't know what you mean. It's weird because I can run dpkg but the error I get is that it is not registered as installed. So I tried to re-install but firet remove the old package. The issue came into play there.

So because when I try to use -e ie erase the package, rpm doesn't think the package is installed. OR is it that I must use another way via rpm to remove a package and that -e is for one file?

Thanks again guys.
