RPM dependencies - HELP!
 

This is possibly the 10th time I've tried installing Linux on a spare box and setting up a web server, and also the tenth time I've found myself within seconds of grabbing the nearest copy of Win2K and wiping the whole thing.... Rant over.

It's the dependencies I'm having trouble with when installing software. Each dependency wants another dependency which is dependent on something else. It's a constant struggle to find the right version, install it, oh wait it's got another dependency etc.

I've spent over a day trying to solve dependencies and I've actually forgotten what I first wanted to install - it may have been apache.

I got a copy of yum and apt - hoping to solve the problem, but it tells me it can't find the rpm I've downloaded and put in the /root directory. And APT tells me that glibc is already the newest version.

I tried to download and install Red Carpet (which promises to install all dependencies for you) but that's got a dependency on glibc (which I can't find anywhere on the internet).

Add to my troubles the fact that I've left my distro CD's in storage and I'm running out of options.

Please could someone help me, as I'm very stuck. All I want to do is:

Install something which makes installing RPM's easier by satisfying all the dependencies (recursively).

Know what dependencies that has first so I can install them before installing the above.

And where do I find those dependent rpms.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

You can check out rpmfind.net
I know that redHat has up2date which does something like that.
And Mandrake has: urpmi
And suse has YAST
Debian has apt-get ...

All great tools that will fix the dependency issue.
Just to note. I think up2date only takes care of update (no installing) while the others do everything.

You say you tried APT, are you talking about apt-get, which, if you get synaptic (the gui for apt-get) takes care of these things. If you are still having trouble you could always go to www.freshrpms.net or www.rpmfind.net and find the exact file you need and install it with the --force command.
