RPM and x server troubles .....

Hi every one,

I've just installed a Debian - Woody R3 and I got 2 problems ....

1/ a problem trying to startx the Xserver. My question is how can I reconfigure my system ?

2/ a problem with RPM: When I'm trying to install a .rpm (jdk-1_5_0-linux-i586.rpm) from a .bin I got the error message :
====================
Do you agree to the above license terms? [yes or no]
yes
Unpacking...
Checksumming...

Extracting...
UnZipSFX 5.42 of 14 January 2001, by Info-ZIP (Zip-Bugs@lists.wku.edu).
inflating: jdk-1_5_0-linux-i586.rpm
error: cannot open Packages index using db3 - No such file or directory (2)
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

Done.
====================

I have found that /rpm is not in /var/lib/ but in /usr/src/

As you can see, I'm totally newbie in Debian (and Linux) world ...... : (

Thank in advance

Fellsin

ive never had any lick with the Java RPM, i always go for the binary install.
download from java.sun.com

as for the problem starting the Xserver, the configureation will be in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or XFree86.conf depending on what X server you are using.

what was the error message, is there anything relevant in the X servers logs in /var/log ?

Thx

For the 1 prob the thing is that I want to install Tomcat 5.5.4 with jdk and jre .... I think my prob comes from my new installation (RPM) not from BINs (jdk-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin - jre-1_5_0-linux-i586-rpm.bin) .....

The X serve I m using is XFree86. the end of the log is :

==========================================
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
==========================================

The thing is my video card is a Matrox G55 and there are no driver on my CD. I thought that I could pick vesa one and install Matrox drivers later ..... (but according to my RPM prob .... it going to be really later lol) ... and pick the lowest screen resolution....

Does that help you qwijibow ????

+++++++++++++++

I've found the XFree86 conf file containing the monitor and screen sections .... what should I do LOL

this simply means there was an error with screen configureation, look furthur up the log / error output for the actual error.
