Having a boot cd, boot floppy, usb key, or some other method of accessing the system when problems arise is most likely the first rule of system administration. Or at least second after "make backups".
Just yesterday my Debian boot floppies saved my rear when I messed up my file server.
Recovery Is Possible (R.I.P.) and tomsrtbt are two useful recovery systems that fit on floppies. I carry them or a live cd whenever I know I'll be working with computers.
