"root logins are not allowed"

Something has caused me to be locked out of root; the KDE login screen now says "root logins are not allowed." It's not as though I don't know the password--I set it up. I might have deleted something I'm not supposed to, because before this, root had also become invisible at the KDE login screen. Any suggestions?

switch to a TTY (ctrl+alt+f1) and log in. it might be set in kdmrc so change it.

From google - http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.p..._Login_for_KDM

What is the shell for root in /etc/passwd? Make sure it is a valid shell.

Thank you, that solved the problem. The relevant line is kdmrc was set fo false. But why was it? I wasn't fooling around with it, so what might have happened? A corrupted file?

I just checked on both my Mepis 8 boxes that are up at the moment and AllowRootLogin was set to true. I've set it to false. I'll take the extra bit of security that provides.

Okay, but as for me, I am the only user; it's my computer. No one else in my home knows how to log in as root or what root is.

Well I am the only user of my linux box too.
Still I never log in as root in the GUI.
My personal reasons for not doing so, is that the GUI hide a lot of system messages .
And if I do perform root task I like to see all this messages.
Hoping to know if something is going wrong , where and what was wrong.
But yes this only my opinion

have you recently done an upgrade or just installed mepis? I know ubuntu and fedora do not allow gui root logins by default. If you just upgraded, that may be a new "feature". If you haven't not sure what would make it change by itself

I had same problem

I uninstalled gnome (gdm) trying to solve another x problem. The computer took me to a more basic graphical interface where I couldn't login as root.

So I entered run level 2 and turned off selinux by appending the following to kernel line

selinux=0 2

That let me login to the shell with networking enabled. There I reinstalled gnome.

I then rebooted under run level 5 with selinux=0 appended to kernel line. That allowed me to login as root.

huh?

Why does it matter if thread is old? This is the page that showed up in the search engine when I looked for solution. I thought it would be helpful. How about a little appreciation that I even took the time to post a follow up and help the community. I'll just find another forum.

Hello, and welcome to LQ !

Well this thread is not *too* old, and it is nice that you bothered to post up the solution, but generally you should not post in threads older than 6 months unless you have a very solid reason for doing so.

Hope you enjoy your stay here

EDIT
and do specify your distro in your earlier post !
