root disk in RedHat

Hi,

I know to make a bootdisk in RedHat 9.0 you use the mkbootdisk command. However, how do you make a root disk?

Ok now it beats me but what is a root disk :-)
Maybe you can explain.

The root disk has a compressed kernel image that allows the loading of a linux environment.

do you mean like... the "boot disk" that you are asked to make when you install linux so that you can use it to load Linux if anything should go wrong with your boot loader??

A useful root disk also has to get a root filesystem from somewhere: usually it's compressed on the bootdisk too, and when booted it expands into a ramdisk. I don't think they're easy to make, but there are some available to download.

Apparently tomsrtbt is a well featured boot+root disk... handy in an emergency. http://www.toms.net/rb/

There are others, also LEAF and parted have special purpose boot+root floppies. Knoppix is a pretty complete distro that boots from a CD: http://www.knoppix.org/
