RHEL4 sees only 1GB out of 4GB RAM
 
I have a 32bit x86 machine with 4GB RAM.
I installed RHEL4, kernel 2.6.9-22. When I run free -m, total reads as 883.

As far as I understand 4GBs does not require any special configuration as they exactly fit the 32bit limit. So where are additional 3GB?

You need to reconfigure the kernel to include himem support then compile and reinstall it
