RH 9.0 / Samba Large File Transfers

I'm running Linux Redhat 9.0 using Samba ver 2.2.7a-8.9.0

I have 2 shares using samba.

One is an ext3 linux partition and the other is a vfat (Fat32) partition.

I can copy files back and forth from all of my Windows XP machines to both shares.

However when I try to copy a large file to the vfat share, it returns the following error.

"cannot copy <file>: The specified network name is no longer available."

Even though I can copy the same file to the ext3 share with no problems. Therefore I don't think it is a Network issue, but rather the interaction between samba and the Vfat partition.

I've tried numerous tweaks and settings but have had no luck.

I have done some debuging on the problem and this is the message I get in the log file at the time the large file fails.

Share violation on file (4,1,1,18361,win98se.iso,fcbopen = 0, flags = 0) = 0
rjesse opened file win98se.iso read=Yes write=No (numopen=1)

There is no other users and or machines connected to the Samba server so it can't be a share violation.

Not sure if this is your problem, but the Samba that RH9 uses by default is faulty. It will disconnect when you don't want it to. I have had different but similar problems. Make sure you get the newest possible version of Samba, maybe that'll help.

I did try running Samba 3.0.10 and 3.0.11Pre1 and both had the same problem with VFAT shares.
