Question RH 7.3 Memory & Swap

just a quick one.

hope I'm in the right forum. if not please point me in the right place.

I have just upgraded two servers from 512MB to 1GB memory. The servers are Identical with lots of space.

I have one server that is showing 1GB memory and 1GB swap after reboot and the other is showing 1GB memory and 512MB swap after reboot.
I do not see this as a problem but if anyone can tell me why this has come about. i would be grateful.

Thanks

Wombats

swap is simply disk space that is used when you run out of real memory (virtual memory).

Apparently, when the system were configured, somebody configured one with more swap space
then the other. Look in the /etc/fstab file or run 'swapon -s' to see the swap partition.

thanks for your reply.

before the memory was upgraded the servers were showing 512mb swap each.

do you not think that one should have shown 512mb swap and the other 1gb swap before the new memory was added?

now i'm confused

Yup you're correct man. Some problem either in your calculations or else . Check it out ...

Try mount to see the details of your mounted partitions and their size. I don't think there is a problem with your system though. I think it is probably human error of some kind .

The only way that your swap space could have changed is:

a) You repartitioned and reformatted the disks, changing the size of the swap space
b) You previously were using a swap file (in addition to the swap partition) and now the
file is missing on the drive with 500M
c) Your getting old and your mind is going ;-)
