Question retrieving original file after saved changes

hi,

is there a way to retrieve the original file after modifying and saving changes if the changes are not needed.

apart from version control methods is there any other means? any info could be found from logs? etc.,.

Thanks in advance.

If it's a text file, the editor you used to modify it probably kept a backup, with a slightly different name (e.g. Emacs, by default appends a ~ to the filename for the original).

The files should survive reboots - they're just regular files after all. Perhaps vi doesn't enable this feature by default. You might want to read the documentation for whichever clone of vi you're using.
