Restoring old computer

Background/Information :
--------------------------------------------
Guy on my block throws out 3 computers (he turns out to be a linux guy also (irrelevant to the problem)). I'm working on getting one of these up and running with slackware. Computer is a Pentium-S 133Mhz.

Problem :
---------------------------------------------
Can't seem to get anything to boot! I got a copy of coyote linux onto a floppy (which worked fine in the same floppy drive in another computer) and tried to boot from the floppy, but got a "boot failed" message. Ok. Hooked up a cd-rom to it (I know the cd-rom & all of my cds are good) and this is what happend :
Slackware CD 8.0 .................. "Boot Failure"
Mandrake Linux 8.2 ............... "Loading Linux.......<hang>"
Corel Linux ............................... "LILO <hang>"
Win2kPro ................................... "Boot Failure"

Any help on this is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

you need to use a different kernel, assuming the floppy drive is good

get the bare.i or lowmem.i or one of the others. just try them till you get one that boots.

as far as the cdrom goes it could be a jumper setting, a cable or something in the bios.

I currently own a 166 mmx which is 4 o 3 months newer than the one you got and, although the motherboard claims to support cd booting, it actually does not in 90 percent of the cases (slack cd's included, both 8 and 8.1). Other than that, floppy should work just fine...

Maybe that is why they were tossed away??

Mux.

do you have any computers that boot?

if they have a network card you can use any system for net install

if you have one of the older windows versions you can do http server with pws. if you have pro version of nt or better it is available on the system.
