resolve hostnames
 

hi,
i am on LAN (using cable) My Ip=131.107.16.16 and my server's ip=131.107.16.1, the main problem is that my linux box is unable to resolve hostnames, like whenever i try to connect to (or ping) messenger.hotmail.com it does'nt work but when i use its ip instead of hostname it works (means i can connect but can't resolve), my server(cable provider) has m$ isa server installed and i've m$ isa client on my windows and it resolves hostnames on my win machine but when it comes to linux it doen't resolve(as no m$ isa on linux) my /etc/resolv.conf looks like this

nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 192.168.0.1
search 192.168.0.1

i've also tried DNS=131.107.16.1 but nuthings workin :(

and my ipconfig /all on win machine looks like this

another things is my linux machine doesn't resolve hostnames of other users on my lan too

ok so change that nameserver entry to the DNS ip you have there... can you ping the IP itself? if so then with that IP (assuming it is correct) then it should be reoslving no probs.

wel even after disabling m$ isa f/w client on win machine i'm unable to ping any hostnames, that means that m$ isa client is resolving hostnames(somehow but dunno how) and i've already tried DNS=131.107.16.1(lan servers ip)

try sprint's DNS servers.. they work well for me and I'm on time warner(who has crappy name servers) cable

ns1.sprintlink.net 204.117.214.10
ns2.sprintlink.net 199.2.252.10
ns3.sprintlink.net 204.97.212.10

of course, I get <20ms pings to those servers... maybe you can use the name servers of another major ISP/backbone if sprint's are too far away from you.

can u post some ip for workin nameservers plz
