resizing partitions doesnt work

hi,

i got two operating systems on my computer, Fedora Core 4 and Win2k
now i want to resize one of the exsisting partition to install ubuntu to take a look at a debian-based system
i have no free space left on my harddrives so i really have to resize one partition.

Code:
[root@supersucker ~]# fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hdc: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 1 20 160618+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdc2 1318 3894 20699752+ 83 Linux
/dev/hdc3 * 21 1317 10418152+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hdc4 3895 9729 46869637+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hdc5 3895 4156 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hdc6 4157 9729 44765091 83 Linux

Partition table entries are not in disk order

Disk /dev/hdd: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14946 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdd1 * 2 14946 120045712+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hdd5 2 14946 120045681 83 Linux
there are two candidate partitions for resizing /dev/hdc6 and /dev/hdd5, so i tried to downsize one of them with qtparted.

first of all i unmounted them:

Code:
[root@supersucker ~]# umount /dev/hdc6
[root@supersucker ~]# umount /dev/hdd5
but if i now start qtparted and try to select "resize" in the context menu, this wont work because the menu-entry "resize" is dimmed out (i hope this is the right word), and i dont know why..

if i try to access partition hdc6 with qtparted (that means when i click on the harddrive and qtparted loads the harddisk information) i see the following error message in the konsole in which i started qtparted:

Code:
Error: Filesystem has incompatible feature enabled
No Implementation: Support for opening ntfs file systems is not implemented yet.
Error: Filesystem was not cleanly unmounted! You should e2fsck. Modifying an unclean filesystem could cause severe corruption.
Error: Filesystem has incompatible feature enabled
same with hdd5:

Code:
Warning: Filesystem has errors! You should run e2fsck.
Error: Filesystem has incompatible feature enabled
hmm, ok, but if i do a:

Code:
[root@supersucker ~]# e2fsck /dev/hdc6
the output is:

Code:
e2fsck 1.37 (21-Mar-2005) lin_data_1: clean, 2611/11195712 files, 5396713/11191272 blocks
???

and if i do a:

Code:
[root@supersucker ~]# e2fsck /dev/hdd5
i get:

Code:
e2fsck 1.37 (21-Mar-2005) Filesystem did not have a UUID;
generating one.
Backing up journal inode block information.
lin_data_2 contains a file system with errors, check forced.
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information lin_data_2:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
lin_data_2: 17955/29956864 files (77.9% non-contiguous), 27506881/30011420 blocks
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
and i keep getting the same errror messages in the konsole when i try to access one of the harddisks with qtparted...

what can i do to solve this problem? i.e. downsizing one of those partitions..
are there other (better) tools than qtparted? what would you do?

any help is appreciated....

I would never fsck or re-size any mounted paritions. Boot the system from a live CD instead, I have and like to use the SystemRescueCD for managing partitions; http://www.sysresccd.org/

thx for the tip,

right now i am downloading the rescue cd.

but what do i have to do after i resized partitions?

i am concerned about grub, couldnt it be, that grub wont be able to boot my existing partitions since i changed the partition table "outside" my existing operating systems?

As long as you leave the starting position of the partition alone then you should have no problems. Since the partition hdc5 is the extended partition holding the logial partition hdc6, you only need to resize hdc6 and let the new OS install to the blank space (soon to be hdc7,8,9,???).
