Resizing Linux Partitions will cause data loss?

hi

i have been using linux for some time when i find out that the default installation only partition my hard disk into 3 part ( / , /boot and /swap) , it put all the /var, /home, /usr in the / partitions which from what i know is not good

i want to resize the partition and recreate new /var, /home partitions, but afraid i might erase all the data on it , i have read about 'parted' partitioning program that came with redhat, will this prg able to help me do it without erasing my data?

thanks for any informations that might help me

I have never heard anything bad about having most files in the / partition. The /boot partition should be kept separate because it contains sensitive data, but the other directories should be ok on a partition together. Plus, if you separate them, you need to worry about how much room they're each going to take up...

Yes, parted is an excellent program and should do what you want. However, back up your data first. Things can go wrong.
