rescue system...complex issue
 

Hi... we have a problem really complex (...i think so)
We have a subnotebook with no cdrom, or a floppy attached or available at all :(
We don't have the money to buy them :(
One of us has destroyed the mbr of his hard disk.... Don;t ask me how... We don't know and it is not possible to learn it in future time :(
The harddisk has 2 partitions. One with windows and the other with useful data (like knoppix.....-->can't be used at all)...
The subnotebook supports booting from network..... I think that we can rescue the machine if we can boot a small linux os from network so we can use a shell prompt...
But how? What ip we should give and what the machine with that ip must provide? Dhcp functionality? TFTP? Do u know any guide for these purposes?

the distribution which i use REDHAT LINUX

i can make a bootup floppy whch can look for a server which has the setup files on it . i have installed like this way on a system without a CDROM, and i think u can go to rescue mode from that.
if u do not have any floppy then ur ethernet card must support boot from network,then it will work

My understanding is you need to connect to a server via the bootp protocol to boot a diskless machine. Here is the linux HOWTO:

I have never used this tho', and don't even know if this is the method supported by your notebook.

If your notebook is pretty new, it may also be able to boot off USB, so you could borrow a USB external drive, or it's also possible to boot off flash memory.
