required packages
what packages does a linux distribution need in order to get on the internet and basically thats all that i need and a desktop environment. What do i need?

By your last post, i assume you want a more or less complete list for LFS.


dhcpcd (a DHCP client, to setup networking)

links (a text mode web browser, just for recuse situations)

Thats about it. Only links has real dependices, according to Gentoo, without X, there are still a hundred or so packages, tho, i can probably get that down to about 50 if i remove more config options. Conveniently, those 50 packages are almost entirely the same as a normal LFS install.

edit: the DE requires you select a DE, but any case, you still need Xorg installed and configured, firefox also will have lots of dependices. A real mess, im not going to even bother listing the dependices for a DE and web browser.
