Replacing Novell 4.11

Hi All,

I am finally going to replace my Novell 4.11 server. I would like to know if any of the other server operating systems (windows or Linux) out there have the equivalent to filer on Novell. I know files can always be retrieved from the backup tapes if they are deleted or incorrectly modified but filer can quickly and easily retrieve files that have been modified at any time.

Also how does Linux compare to Novell 4.11 as a file & print server? I use Redhat 7.0 at the moment for lots of stuff but not as a file or print server because Novell was so good and easy to use.

This information will help me decide which OS to use for my new server.

Thank you for your help.

Yes I have tried Samba and it works very well but is there a way to restore files that have been modified incorrectly like you can with filer on Novell server. Novell keeps track of all files that have been modified and they can be restored at any time without using the backup tapes.

Does Linux do anything like this?

Cheers,
Peter

You'd want to use some kind of revision control software like RCS or CVS.. but Linux currently doesn't have anything like this enabled natively to my knowledge. It's all backup tapes unless you use CVS or the like..
