replacement for .avi, new video file containers?

Hi

I have recently read that avi is supposed to be replaced as a filecontainer. Does anybody know the new ones?
MP4?
What advantages do they have (subtitles included and such?), any drawbacks? I am looking for a new container to put my self made movies in.
Of course it should be something cross plattform that is fully supported under Linux.

I would use mkv, but you can see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...tainer_formats
Most blu-ray players can now play mkv.

There's also a great tool set for mkv, where you can easily extract and combine video and audio and subtitle streams into an mkv, much easier to work with than other container formats. I like it :)

...
Matroska Multimedia Container is an open standard free container format, a file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio,

is entirely open in specification, with implementations consisting mostly of open source software

Perfect! I am sold!

This is exactly what I am looking for. Even better than Avi ever was.

Thanks for the pointer.
