sound like the Terminal service using rdp (remote Desktop Protocol) basically a thin client similar to Citrix etc.. yeah it will run on an older slower system, but just remember on the server side you need a Very beefy server machine to take care of a lot of clients..

you still need a secure OS on which to run the terminal services client.. (Linux with rdesktop perhaps ? )

I couldnt find the exact article, but I found a very similar one that explains what I meant here.

http://www.hunterstrat.com/news/2005...are-assurance/

Ironically, I could not find it at Microsoft's site. But I did see that MS is offering a free virtual server. Anyone try it? have an opinion of it.

Even if it turns a machine that's happily giving you a GUI
(Ok, a crappy GUI) into a router, and it's your only machine?

Cheers,

I too would really look hard at putting linux on pc's, business or at home.

All I can say is a friend of mine was at his job one day, and was talking to his IT guys as they were fixing his floors internet/lan they had issues. Anyway, he was chatting with them, and he told them how I got him into slackware recently and how he loved it. Then one of the "IT guys" said "I know a guy who uses linux, but its' not really a good alternative becuase the code is so freely available on the internet."

When what he should have said is, "I'm lazy and I got my degree from a cracker jack box and I live in my mother's basement. And becuase I'm lazy I never looked into linux, although it's computer related, my ignorance over-whelmeth me."

The sad thing is there are probably so many IT guys just like this in the real world. Un-willing to look into alternatives, cost savings out of pure laziness. And the fact that they just tell they're boss, "hey MS has a new thing for our old pc's" and they feel safe. Why rock the cradle type of mind set. Give the boss what he wants, no big equipment purchase and a supposed "safe" option by the market share leader.

But as we all know, feeling safe does not mean you are safe. Leave it to MS to find a way to basically make a windows 98 second edition updates volume 5 and bill it out at the price of a whole new OS.
