Repeated App. Install Failure

Hi,

Re: RH WS 2.1, my biggest and most frustrating failure, so far, is my inability to install apps. successfully.

I'll group the problems in categories. The first problem is in ./configure permission denied

a. ntp (a clock sync utility) permission denied
b. GAIM: config fail because I need Glib 2.0. I install Glib 2.07 and the result is "permission denied."
c. ksetiwatch obsolescent base 64 headers permission denied

What is the procedure for handling "permission denied"? Must I, in each case, track down the reason? Is it really this complicated or am I missing something?

d. antivir Need Dazuko module Should I really pursue this or just dump the app and find another one?

e. Open.Office I believe this has been successfully installed (./configure make install) but what are the steps for initiating the application??

Thanks.

"permission denied."

You need to log in as root or su to root. Failure to do so will result in "permission denied."

"Open.Office I believe this has been successfully installed (./configure make install) but what are the steps for initiating the application??"

Open Office can be installed as either root or user. The way that Open Office is set up during a root install is superior. If you successfully installed Open Office as user I suggest that you uninstall it and then install it again as root.

After you install Open Office as root then run it for the first time as root. The first time you run it Open Office will lead you through initialization. Then you can run Open Office as user.
