Removing .a libraries in /usr/lib/
I am really short of space on my system.

I believe that .a files in /usr/lib are for static compiles (i.e. gcc -static)

Since I will not be doing any compiles on this box (slackware) would it be safe to delete the .a files.

yea seems like you could do that

you can also srip out debugging symbols on libs
strip --strip-debug /usr/lib/*

and for executables
strip --strip-unneeded /usr/{,s}bin/*

be carefull with the command you use though --strip-unneeded kills libs !
so you might want to go slow and deliberate rather than in a big swath

and i think don't try to strip kernel modules
