I've been asked if it's possible to access remote X-windows applications from a Windows XP box.
This is the scenario. We've got a math processing application that would run great on a 64-bit Opteron box. We're going to put Linux on it but the guy who is going to be accessing it will be using Windows XP.
What do I need for that to happen? Is it possible? I've got cygwin on a box of mine but haven't yet figured out if it's possible.
Hello,
X and SSHd can be setup to forward X, but that's linux to linux.
You could set it up that way and load CYGwin on the WinXP box and do it that way.
I know you can use SSH to forward VNC, but that would be to connect to a windows machine behind a *nix box.
I'm looking for alternatives, but that may help.
Others might have a better alternative.

I did that yesterday, actually. It's dead easy: Set SSH running on your Linux box, configured to allow X11 forwarding.
Then use "ssh -Y" to your Linux from within the Cygwin xorg environment & just run your X apps from the SSH session, and they'll pop up on XP. I could even watch a DVD on XP that was in my Linux box's DVD-ROM
Hello,
When installing CYGwin, you should have the ability to choose specific packages.
It's a somewhat long list, but you can skip some things (last time i looked, they're arranged by category).
Install SSH, then issue ssh -Y ipaddress, it should work wonders.
