Remote backup of Windows(XP) machines on user logout

Hy all,

I have few WindowsXP machines and need to setup a ( possibly a Gentoo ) server that would do a remote backup when the user logs off Windows machine....

Now i have asked this on #gentoo ( freenode ) and a guy suggested locking a machine to Samba Domain Controller...
Of course i have no bloody idea on how to setup a Samba Domain Controller, and configure it correctly...
Also the papers i have read on this are quite large and the problem is i have no time to read this through and understand it, cause i have to setup server tomorrow for the test run! and i have never did it before!

Please, if you have any idea on how to do this quickly i would very much appreciate it
At least a link to some short tutorial on how to implement Domain Controller quickly or some other possible solution.

At first my idea was to do this through Samba shares and cron. Cron would run script that would mount shared partitions( drives, directories ), back them up an unmount the partitions... O.K. But the problem exists in the fact that this would have to be done in preorder time intervals, leading to the situation in which not all files would be fully synchronized cause not all stations are up all the time...

The friend of mine told me that it is possible to do this with WindowsNT 2003Server , in the manner that when to user logs off the machine files get backed up... But i have no idea how to easily signal the Linux server to start backup on user log out and stop the Windows machine from shutting down for the time needed for the backup.
And the users usually shut down the machines after use... :x

Thanks in advance...

This is more of a windows solution. there are lots of programs to synce your xp box, I use unison my self. to be able to do it automatically at logout would have to be a windows feature.

Tell that to my boss...
You see.. i know this would be very simple to do with Windows but also this means they have to pay a licence for it....
Which, of course, they don't want to... So i am stuck with this...

Although, i am thinkig of another solution...

1. Setup RAID1 over 2 - 3 disks - solved backup

2. Share user directorys over Samba
3. Link My Documents ( as it seems logical ) to point to the shared directory
4. Hope that they would agree to this solution

And viola ... everything is automagicly saved to the server with backup
