Remote access of Linux from XP
 

I just installed my first Linux system (Fedora 4) to see what it was like. It went well and is up and running.

The last time I messed with anything like this was Xenix about 15 years ago and don't know squat about Linux.

Is there any way to access Linux from an XP machine (on the same network)? Something like remote desktop in the windows world.

VNC.
You have a VNC server running on your Linux system and get connected to the server with the VNC client.
You can download it for fre from the website. I know they have improved VNC but not so sure about how. Maybe you can tell us.

FreeNX is another way. It's much faster than VNC. Probably won't make a ton of difference over a LAN, but if you need to access things across the Internet (even dialup) then FreeNX will work nicely whereas VNC will be unworkably slow.

Hey guy's i don't know whether to cry or laugh here and hope someone can help

I've never used Linux before but thought I’ll quickly pick it up (haha!) so I recently started hosting a dedicated server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Version 4.0 to run a specific web application.

So far, I’ve only been able to get to the command prompt on the Linux machine using Putty/ssh and not really been able to do much – but I believe there is a desktop like environment that im missing out on, and may be easier to get to grips with – but how do I access this?

I’ve been trying to install TightVNC onto the Linux machine as I believe this allows me to control it from a Windows XP machine but after downloading the .gz file to my Windows XP machine from tightvnc.org I’ve been unable to transfer it to the Linux machine and then install the application

Could someone please help me out here by telling me how to do transfer this file and install the app so that I can connect to this machine and see the desktop for the first time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I installed VNC client on one XP machine and all it does is bompb out with "Unable to connect to host" A socket operation was atttempted to an unreachable host. (10065)".

If you're running FC4 along with its defaults, which mean gnome desktop, there's a built-in vnc server, called vino.

in the desktop, go to desktop>preferences>remote desktop; check the appropriate boxes and set the pw.

the dialog will tell you that the viewing machine command is vncviewer:0, or whatever display your linux box is on, etc, but in your case you'll have to input the ip address of the linux box.

unlike the advanced vnc versions available for windows, there is no file transfer capability in vino, or any other linux vnc software. for file transfers, you'll have to set up samba or use ssh.

to control the linux box from outside the lan, you'll have to open port 5900.

there's another thread going at the moment with more detailed setup info, but this'll at least allow you access from within your lan.
