Personally I use noatime options in my /etc/fstab with a reiserfs

cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hda7 / reiserfs noatime,acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/hda5 /boot ext2 acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/hda8 /home reiserfs noatime,acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

As for performance, it is difficult to measure but if you want a faster file system consider tuning your hard drive with hdparm. Here's one link from google

http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/...29/hdparm.html

When mounting REISERFS partition U are presented with different option on how to mount it. And one of them is the NOTAIL option.
But I'm wondering would I gain better performance with the NOTAIL option or without it??

Reiserfs notail option is advertised to increase performance at the expense of storage efficiency.

As to know if you'll gain performance with it, you are the only able to provide an answer, by doing a benchmarck with your own data and processes.

By measuring with a timer how long does it takes to complete some operation with and without the option, and comparing the results.

1. Boot with notail enabled
2. Take stopwatch.
3. At same time, start stopwatch and start running a process
4. Time how long process takes.
5. Stop stopwatch when process finishes.
6. Note how long process took.
7. Repeat 2 - 6 with notail option disabled.
8. Compare times.

Write one yourself. It's not hard.

If you don't like the stopwatch option, have a look at the time command (man time).
